Schisandra Extract Information:

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is the dehydrated mature fruits of a herb known as Schisandra chinensis and belongs to the Schisandraceae family. Schisandra is widely farmed in China, particularly the northeastern part of the country. It is most commonly found in Lianoning, Hebei, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces and is grown by sowing seeds. The seeds are sown in spring and the schisandra fruit is reaped in autumn after it is completely mature.

Schisandra chinensis is a deciduous woody vine native to forests of Northern China and the Russian Far East. Its berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs. They are most often used in dried form, and boiled to make a tea. Medicinally it is used as a tonic and restorative adaptogen with notable clinically documented liver protecting effects.

Indications and Uses:
Modern Chinese research suggests that lignans in Schisandra regenerate liver tissue damaged by harmful influences such as viral hepatitis and alcohol.
Schisandra fruit may also have an adaptogenic action, much like the herb ginseng, but with weaker effects. Laboratory work suggests that Schisandra may improve work performance, build strength, and help to reduce fatigue.

Side effects involving Schisandra are uncommon but may include abdominal upset, decreased appetite, and skin rash. Some herbs are known to react with your medication. Please consult your physician before starting on any herb.
